Priekšmetiem piemīt īpašības uzsūkt , atstarot vai laist cauri gaismas starus. Lai uztvertu priekšmeta krāsu, gaismas stariem no tā jāatstarojas mūsu acī. Tā, piemēram, ja kāds priekšmets atstaro tikai zaļo gaismas staru, uzsūcot visus pārējos spektra starus, mēs šo priekšmetu redzam zaļā krāsā. Bet, ja šo priekšmetu novietotu gaismā, kurā nav zaļo staru tas mums liktos melns. Priekšmets, kas laiž cauri gaismas starus, izskatās caurspīdīgs.
