The next level up is the shrub/small tree level. In this level you will find many shrubs, bushes, small trees, saplings, and young specimens of the full grown tree species found in the forest. Species of shrubs and bushes found throughout this layer include berry bushes, rhododendron bushes, and azaleas. Much of the forest's wildlife feeds on the berry bushes and other shrubs found on this level.
The top level is the canopy/overstorey layer, which contains the canopy and foliage of the fully grown trees. Most bird species and squirrels of the deciduous forest inhabit this layer. Other mammals such as raccoons, chipmunks, and opossums can be found climbing trees, but usually do not dwell in the canopies. Bears species have also been known to climb trees, but are rarely spotted doing such and do not make the canopy their home.
