Strategies currently employed:
It has been more than two years that the empty Dome have been gathering dust and the reputation of MEC has been severely under attack. The delay is a serious embarrassment to ministers and MEC after two failed attempts in disposing the Dome. MEC has recently adopted new strategies to attract investors and also are adopting a back up strategy to generate revenues till they find a suitable buyer.
The MEC has been trying to make use of the empty Dome by leasing it for a short-term use and one-off events to generate revenue for maintaining the Dome and reduce burden on tax payees.
MEC has confirmed that the latest strategy to resolve the problem is to give a way the Dome free of cost to the Meridian Delta consortium an Australian based company, but insist them to redevelop the 170 acres surrounding the Dome. This development would mean that there would be about 7000 homes built around the area most of which will be affordable, along with bringing in more jobs into the area.
Meridian Delta consortium (MDC) has also agreed to develop 340,000 sq meters of new office space, 33,000 sq meters of shops, a hotel, entertainment area including bars and restaurants. The MDC would sub-let the Dome to Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) to develop a 26,000 seat entertainment and sports complex by 2007.
