A panel of U.S. scientists says there is no evidence that food from genetically engineered animals is unsafe to eat and therefore do not see the harm as these fish are just pets. Nevertheless, I must say I do see the harm as these fish are primarily used for research and in the case that one of these little guys does get flushed since they sterilize the fish, they would not be able to contaminate wild populations if they are somehow set free.
Although Taikong believes their little glow in the dark linchpin is worth millions, the reaction in Europe, where resistance to genetic modification runs high. "Fish shops in the U.K. won't touch them with a barge pole," predicts Derek Lambert, editor of Today's Fishkeeper, an enthusiasts' magazine. "There's a very strong anti-genetic-engineered-fish feeling in the U.K."
