IDENTITIES
The typical household is significantly larger than that of the US; four or more children are typical of a family. It is not uncommon for family members of the previous generation to be included in this nucleus. Due to the consistently large families, the family tree extends far, with many aunts and uncles. Custom calls for parents insist upon having their children live at home until they can either afford their own home, or marry into another. Roman Catholicism is the primary religion in Mexico. This dates back to Franciscan, Dominican, Augustinian, and Jesuit missionaries who accompanied the Spanish conquerors. 89% of the population is Roman Catholics while 6% are Protestants and the remaining 5% are other various religions. The minority religions include Jews and Protestants. Over the past 20 years as part of a backlash from the Presidential reign of Echeverria and Portillo Mexicans have become less tolerant of corruption and more cynical and distrustful towards government bureaucrats, police, and politicians. The division of wealth is more extreme in Mexico than that it is in the US. This accounts for the class struggles, fortunately more and more peasants are begging to believe in the electoral process as corruption in the system still tampers its legitimacy.
