Many ethical questions present themselves when dealing with research on deception. Caution has to be exercised when participants are requested to be deceptive. The researchers in this study however, appear to have used restraint in their requirements.
Conclusion
There are too many variables in this study to be able to look at the results objectively. Although some of the data would seem to support the researchers findings, much of it can only be taken at face value. Less could have been more in this study. Improvements on this research would include only testing for behavioural clues and then seeing if all the data supported the theory on micro-expressions. The one useful conclusion arising from this research is that the Secret Service performed significantly better than all other groups. Perhaps a study into their techniques in detecting deception would prove beneficial to other organisations.
