So why would some reject this means to finding the acceptance and understanding that they thrive for? There are some disabled people that fight the stigma of being handicapped or lacking, in spite of the facts. Quite often, people that were not brought up in the disabled community have a sense of denial, or overwhelming pride, that rules out any association with what they see as a "help" group. To take part in such a group to them would mean that they accept that they, in fact, are handicapped. For example, my grandfather has been partially deaf for many years. He is still reluctant to talk about his forced retirement from the police force due to his disability. He refuses hearing aids, and won't park in the handicapped parking places, as he fights to hear on his own. In Jim Knipfel's (pen name Slackjaw) personal testament on his transition from having sight to blindness, he clearly displays this internal fight with his limitations.…
