One statement made in one of the articles provides an interesting point: "Fear and how to combat it was a topic that obsessed Hemingway, but did not much concern his narrator. In two other eliminated passages, Frederic demonstrates a capacity for love that is missing...But Hemingway left it out, probably because its inclusion might have aroused undue empathy with his narrator" (Donaldson 110-111). Here lies evidence that would have further shown Frederic's deep love, compassion, and affection for Catherine, how he was conflicted the Lord for taking Catherine away and how he yearned to be with her, yet it was left out. The passages would have shown that Frederic's character is that much more admirable for his devotion to Catherine but they are inexcusably omitted because of Hemingway's desire to not create too much of a sense of understanding for the feelings and emotional experiences of the narrator Frederic.…
