This extract “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; Chapter IX – The Mock Turtle’s Story” contains a conversation between Alice, the Mock Turtle and The Gryphon. Mostly the Mock Turtle is talking to Alice. He tells about his education, which, as he thinks, is the finest available. He has studied a variety of unusual subjects, such as Derision, Distraction, Uglification and Ambition. Alice asks about the length of the lessons that he had, and the Mock Turtle says that they become shorter with each day. He also explains to surprised Alice that they were called “lessons” because they lessen with each coming day. When Alice asks what happens when there is no more time for lessons, the Gryphon, who is not really taking part in the conversation, quickly changes the subject to games. …
