The Study in Depth of the Gothic Genre

In the poem 'The Raven' by Edgar Allen Poe, there are a numerous Gothic elements presented to the reader. Firstly, symbolism is one of the distinguishing elements used as the raven itself represents a creature of ill-omen and a non-reasoning being who only spoke of the word "Nevermore".
Bust of Pallas, being the goddess of wisdom in Greek mythology, is obviously a symbol of wisdom. For the raven to be standing on top of Pallas' head, this possibly suggests to the reader that the raven was speaking from its wisdom, but not merely repeating its 'stock and store'.
The composer's word choice is yet another distinguishing element as it creates dark imageries in our imagination. For example, the one worded phrasing/repetition that the raven speaks, "Nevermore", is a sign of guilt, which is tormenting the narrator. Additional word choices such as "weary", "dreary", "faint", and "haunt" together emphasises the solemn tone of the writing as well as reflecting on the idea that the narrator is driven by guilt and sorrow.
