In this essay, I will explore what Wallace Stevens illustrated in his poem “Thirteen Ways Of Looking At A Blackbird”.
Wallace Stevens’s poem “Thirteen Ways Of Looking At A Blackbird” is a poem from his first book of poetry “Harmonium”, and first published in 1917, written in modernism period. The poem is classified among the metaphysical poems in “Harmonium”, perhaps because it creates an atmosphere of mystery and provides an unutterable message or knowledge that death comes to all that lives – it is a part of a cycle. The poem consists of thirteen short, separate sections or stanzas, labelled with the corresponding Roman numeral. There is mentioned an image of a blackbird in all of the sections, which is a unifying factor. A link to Imagism is obvious - each of the sections demonstrates a fragmentary immediacy that relates it to Imagism.…
