Religion has always been a central component of human culture though its form and practice and it has changed from time to time. Ancient people lived in a world they could not explain or comprehend. Their world consisted of an environment controlled by vague and mysterious powers attributed to a wide range of gods. Artifacts dating to prehistory suggest that the religion of the past reflected this world, consisting mainly of rituals to help explain events under the influence of gods or forces. As in the distant past, Religion still answers questions about the mystery of life and many religions try to manage specific aspects of life. In particular, one of these religions is Islam.
Islam is faith in Allah and in his prophet Muhammad, "the last and the greatest of prophets," and observance of the Five Pillars or obligations. The most important act of faith that Muslims have is the phrase," There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet." Islam was the third major religion to emerge in the Middle East and to spread its message throughout the world. Islam is a civilization that preserves the cultures of the ancient world and also makes important contributions of its own.
