My critique on this reading is that Adorno over and under estimates jazz. The overestimation is not only of its danger but of its social meaning. He chose to decode jazz as a commodity where he recognised mechanisms. Therefore Adorno’s text deserves to be worked through to understand now omnipresent mechanisms of cultural production by using his psycho-sociological conclusions. He uses passionate and disparaging language to describe jazz in this way, but later when the syncopated dance music times were over, in the times of 1930s, when the first big band music was already heard in Germany, he did not change or revise his opinion.…
