Michael Lucero and the Lady with Two Curls

A person with a background or knowledge in art history would actually be able to understand and appreciate it even more. For example, as Lippard explains, the two curls on the figure's head actually resemble the Hopi squash-blossom hairdo worn by unmarried girls (45.) The bar code can be interpreted as simply a prevalent symbol in modern western society. I thought that it was an interesting effect that Lucero places what I believe to be the date he either started working on or finished a piece on the bar code. There is a pattern in all of the pieces that contain the barcode, that the date which they were made corresponds to the date on the piece. The numbers on this particular piece read 7, 9, 1; the date would naturally be sometime in July 1991, which in fact is the year it was made. The white hand could symbolize modern pop culture as easily as it could represent the colonialism brought into the Americans during Columbus time. I think that is a main point in this piece, the colonialism of white men onto many different cultures and tribes of people.…
