The music used in the movie did not only reflect the mood it also gave an indication of the time and era the movie was set in. Seeing the movie was set in 1947-1966 the music reflected the era. I am unsure, but I believe they played a Glenn Miller song. Also incorporated into the movie were movie stars of the eras, which appeared on posters. One of these stars was Marilyn Monroe.
There was a large amount of violence in this movie, which suggested tough times. There was not only physical violence but verbal as well. I found the violence to be extremely depressing and very intense. There are many examples of violence in the movie like when Andy was bashed by The Sisters (a bully group in the prison) repeatedly and how the guards had the authority to bash any inmate basically to death. Although I was appalled at this, the violence goes with the themes of imprisonment and suppression.
