Sound
The "Sound of silence" is very important in this movie. It has virtually no score beneath the dialogues, and lack of sound is noticeably important in scenes such as the scuba gear scene and the wedding scene. This song is symbolic of Benjamin accepting the darkness of immorality, the silence, and then becoming entrapped and numbed by it. The song is almost like a lullaby, corresponding to the emotional and mental fatigue of the two characters. The second song, "April Come She Will," signifies the loss of Ben's innocence and the inevitable progression of the doomed relationship. Like the months of the year, the love affair unfolds, blossoms, bitters, dies, and decays. From a time of spring and optimistic hope, Benjamin tires of the relationship: "September, I'll remember, a love once new has now grown old."
