Jelgava castle is an early work of the famous Russian architect Philippe Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli and one of the few monuments of Jelgava's architectural monuments, preserved to this day. The largest Baroque castle in the Baltic States, the former residence of the Dukes of Kurzeme and Zemgale, the administrative center of Kurzeme province, today is the headquarters of the Latvian University of Agriculture.
The new buildings of Jelgava Castle were withheld in the style of the Northern European Mannerism (they were the first example of a new architecture in Latvia). After the rebuilding, Jelgava Castle from the medieval fortress became a luxurious ruler's residence. Hercog Friedrich Ketler continued the construction of the castle - a castle church was built, a round tower was placed on the apostolic church. The new buildings were connected and surrounded the old convent building on three sides. In this case, the castle stayed until 1737.
