Latvia in NATO
Latvia is involved in the transformation of NATO by participating both in strengthening NATO's capabilities and in international operations and security-enhancing activities undertaken by the Alliance. Within the framework of this process, Latvia has established professional armed forces that meet modern security requirements and are able to engage in both collective defense and crisis prevention activities.
With the transformation of the international security environment, one of the main tasks of the NATO peace-time mission has become international operations to stabilize the regions, which are potentially posing as a threat to the security of allies. Since 1996, when Latvian soldiers first joined the NATO-led operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Latvia has participated in all NATO-led operations in the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan.
