It is noticeable that he is a bit of a realist (or a pessimistic) since his reply to Helen when she says that they might as well, "make it as easy as we can until the plane comes," is "or until the plan doesn't come." He makes another reference to his imminent death by saying, "I'm dying now. Ask those bastards," as he points towards the birds. It is also shown in the beginning that there is something in his life that he regrets, "So now it was all over, he thought.…
