During 1871-3 and 1900-4 he taught at Christ's College. Also of interest was Sir Thomas Tancred who arrived in 1850 before the Canterbury Pilgrims, to become a Professor of Modern History at Christ's College. The connection of Tancred is made to the title of this competition and to that of a similar literature competition.
Although 500 people arriving to make a colony in 1850 may not sound like many, these 500 people have moulded Canterbury society into what it is today. Without the people from these ships, Christ's College may have never flourished and the settlement of Christchurch may have never been built. We take our history for granted in modern day society and rarely does anyone take a look back into our past.
