The garden, which is spoken about at the end of the book, is actually logical thought; which means that to "cultivate the garden" would be to enhance the mind. He never actually lives out his own life, because he is constantly consulting Pangloss. What would Pangloss do if he were in this situation? He ultimately realizes that his previous aspirations of discovering and accomplishing an ideal state of happiness were fulfilled, though his accomplishments were not as grand as he had thought they would be.
