Privacy data protection legislation:
It has been recognised that storage and use of information is necessary for a number of purposes. It has been also been recognised that this can disadvantage a person's right to privacy. The federal government some time ago enacted Privacy and data protection legislation and NSW recently enacted similar legislation. These set out privacy prinicipals, which are not to be breached. It is yet to be seen how effective these will be. It has been argued that these legislation have not gone far enough
In Conclusion there is a need for national security to protect life as we know it. This entails collection, storage and use of data and other information as well as surveillance and interception of telecommunications. This however, comes at the expense of privacy, and the civil liberties. Privacy and data protection has been enacted in an attempt to mediate this disadvantage.
