In 2019/2020, 280,000 patients with alcohol-related illnesses were admitted to hospitals, which is 2% more than in 2018/2019 and 8% more than in 2016/2017. Of the patients admitted to the hospital for illness due to alcohol abuse, more than 65% were male than female. In 2020/2021, 167 thousand prescription units were issued to treat alcohol dependence. This is 1% more than in 2019/2020 but 15% less than in 2014/2015 (NHS, 2021).
In 2019/2020, there were 280 thousand hospitalized patients, whose main reason for hospitalization was related to excessive alcohol consumption. This is 2% more than in 2018/2019. year and by 8% more than in 2016/17. The number of alcoholics admitted increases by 23% with the age of 55-64 and then decreases. (NHS, 2021).
The English city of Stoke-on-Trent had the highest alcohol consumption, with 920 out of 100,000 people consuming alcohol. Wokingham had the lowest alcohol consumption, with 290 out of 100,000 people consuming alcohol (NHS, 2021). Patient enrolment statistics show that 28% were cancer patients after first diagnosis and 14% had alcohol-related mental and behavioural disorders (NHS, 2021). There are an estimated 589,000 people who are dependent on alcohol in England and about a quarter of them are likely to be receiving mental health medication (GOV.UK 2020).
