Of the patients admitted to the hospital for illness due to alcohol abuse, more than 65% were male than female. In 2020/2021, 167 thousand prescription units were issued to treat alcohol dependence. This is 1% more than in 2019/2020 but 15% less than in 2014/2015 (NHS, 2021).

There are an estimated 589,000 people who are dependent on alcohol in England and about a quarter of them are likely to be receiving mental health medication (GOV.UK 2020).
