Early history
When the ice age ended in latvia entered the first inhabitants.
The territory of latvia has been conquered and subjugated by the germans, the swedes, the poles and the russians.
The only information we have about the early balts is archaeological or based on genetic research.
The direct ancestors of modern latvians were of the proto-baltic tribes.

Language
In 1988 Latvian regained its status as the state language in Latvia.
Latvian is now a modern European language used by Latvians in all walks of life.
The Latvian language belongs to the Baltic group of the Indo-European family of languages.
There are about 1,5 million native speakers in Latvia .
The fact that the Latvian language and culture have survived is a wonder in itself.

Traditions
Latvia's 3,000 year old cultural traditions are still a vital part of Latvian life today.
In Latvia, traditions are not just a tourist attraction - they are a part of everyday life.
