The life of Pedro Paulo highlights the harsh reality of favela where the deeply set inequalities and
limited opportunities are intertwined with monetary and social aspects. The exposure to poverty,
violence, and socioeconomic disparities from the early days left a longstanding mark on him.
Witnessing his mother and other family members struggling to make ends meet through “honest”
work ultimately contributed to his attraction to criminality (Goldstein, 2013). This essay will
analyze the complexities Pedro Paulo endured through the framework of class, race, and gender.
Pedro Paulo’s social background meant that the access to quality education and stable employment
was severely restricted. Despite his advancements and high literacy skills during the secondary
