A both social and individual harm is presented by the limited networks and therefore ideas and opportunities that individuals come in touch with when the overlap exists. If we take a J.S. Mill perspective on the market of ideas, this means lesser social benefits.
Ultimately, the same types of reasoning will fit neither all individuals nor societies. Whether this overlapping is more beneficial or harmful may be differ based on the value of common identity vs. the value of individuality and idea sharing that the individual/society holds.
