Folk-songs occupy a particular place in Latvian folklore. We have more than 2 000 000 folk-songs. It is our national treasure. We have a reason to be proud of our folk-songs as only few nations have preserved so many of them. We were lucky to have Krishyanis Barons – the folklorist who devoted all his life to folk-songs. Barons collected and perfected songs. He became the Latvian folk-songs` father. We have these thick volumes of songs and there is the Latvian languege, the Latvian history, the Latvian experience and dreams in them. Our music, painting, graphic arts grew from folk-songs. All Latvian literature grows, blossoms and thrives being based on folk-songs. Therefore we should read and sing these songs even today. In my opinion, we all must learn and know about the wonderful world of folk-songs.
