Although she does like to be pitied, she does not like to shed tears, however she almost cries on a bus when a young teenage girl gets up and gives Hagar her seat, "I scarcely nod my thanks, fearing she'll see my unseemly tears." Hagar does not really know how to deal with emotions, as she has never really expressed them.
