So what does all this add up to? In the absence of any universal accepted interpretation, there are several possibilities. Perhaps Dixon is right and there are alchemic messages hidden inside Bosch's painting. Perhaps
there is a hidden message for those practicing a secret religion and during this time this type of practice amounted to heresy which could have led to death. Yet nothing in the painting suggests this. Finally, perhaps Bosch painted The Garden of Earthly Delights for the viewer to enjoy it images that delight the eye and challenge the imagination.
