Britain is one of the few countries in Europe where double-decker buses (with 2 floors) are a common sight. In Latvia it is rather an exclusive sight. The double-decker buses are rather common in big cities. In small cities it is rather rare sight.
In Latvia very popular has become air transport. The number of direct flights from the airport has increased from 15 routes in 2002 to 60 routes and in 2008 Riga International Airport welcomed even 3.69 million passengers.
It is rather small numbers if we compare to Britain. Firstly, Britain has the world’s busiest airport. Secondly, it has the fourth busiest passenger Airport in Europe too. Thirdly, it has two other fairly large airports close to London which deal mainly with chartes flights.
Modern Britain makes surprisingly little use of its waterways the vast majority of canals are no longer used. Recently the leisure industry has found a use for the country’s waterways with the increasing popularity of boating holidays.
When in Latvia throughout the ages ports have not lost their importance. They still succe3sfully fulfill their basic task-being the gateway between the sea and the land.
