In the dark of the night three witches meet in the depth of the forest and discuss that they will meet Macbeth upon the heath.
Macbeth and his friend-companion Banquo, both king’s noblemen and generals, are heading home from a victorious battle where they defended the king’s honor.
At this time at the king’s palace a sergeant wounded in the same battle reports to the king of Macbeth's grand success as a warrior. King Duncan is impressed. Meantime a messenger arrives at the palace and informs king Duncan of the treachery of the Thane of Cawdor. King Duncan wants him executed and promotes Macbeth to become a new Thane of Cawdor.
