Marcus Tullius Cicero was born on January 3, 106 BC. He was an orator, lawyer, politician, and philosopher. His father moved to Rome when Cicero was a child. Cicero’s family was aristocratic. Cicero chose his motto the same one as Achilles had: “To always be the best and overtop the rest.” Cicero had only two career options open to him. One was military. He was no soldier. He hated wars, and served in the military only very briefly as a young man.
