Relatively early on, it became desirable to formalise these concepts in order to manage them within a software environment. The Loom knowledge representation system and its associated Ontosaurus browser/editor was chosen because Loom is one of the most flexible, least constraining knowledge representation systems currently available and Ontosaurus provides a web front-end to Loom knowledge bases, allowing multiple users to inspect, query, and modify the knowledge base on a network, using a standard web browser.
c) Knowledge Base Construction-
By the time a reasonably-complete conceptual model had been defined, a number of sample cases were already available, having been elicited from optimisation engineers as a natural part of exploring the scope of the domain. When formalising
the conceptual model in Loom, the opportunity was taken to represent these cases using the knowledge containers therein. One-on-one, intensive knowledge acquisition campaigns were conducted with these individuals.
