There are many different treatments for bipolar disorder. There are medications that one can take to help stabilize and prevent the symptoms (NIMH-Bipolar Disorder, 2001). Some examples of these medications are mood-stabilizers, tranquilizers, and antidepressants (MacNanamy, n.d.). In addition to the medications used to treat bipolar disorder, individuals suffering from the disorder have responded quite well to cognitive therapy and group support (MacNanamy, n.d.). There is also a type of treatment called psychosocial. This type of treatment, when combined with the proper medication, is best for treating the disorder over time (NIMH-Bipolar Disorder, 2001). Bipolar disorder, in most cases, is controlled much better if the treatment is continuous, rather than on and off. A person suffering from bipolar disorder should work closely with their doctor to achieve the maximum effectiveness of the treatments being received. It is recommended that someone suffering from bipolar disorder see a psychiatrist, rather than a primary care physician, though both can prescribe treatments for the disorder (NIMH-Bipolar Disorder, 2001).
In conclusion, I feel bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that scientists and doctors both have much to learn about. I feel that the advances in technology over time will help aid in the search for a cure or a totally effective treatment.
