Crime- Not all crime is deviant and not all deviance is crime. They are acts declared illegal by some central authority.
Theories of Deviance- (a) Differential Association- Learn conformity or deviance in small groups. Frequency and length or associations. Learn definitions, motives, techniques, drives and attitudes unfavorable to norms. Deviant subcultures. Criticism?- Why don't all similarly situated people become deviant? (b) Labeling Theory- Deviance resides in the reactions of other people to a behavior and internalization of that reaction. Criticisms- Fails to account for crimes of passion, fails to address initial deviance. (c) Strain Theory- Difference between the goals established by society and the ability those goals produces strain and frustration that can lead to deviance.
