Chatwin's deep thoughts and descriptions drive me think so. There are some other extraordinary characters that are also narrated with some deep meanings, which make the book more thoughtful and fascinating. Therefore, the thoughts of the author are essential in travel writing.
As travel writing is a freewheeling device of travel experiences, it also has some other elements to perfect it. However, honesty, revealment of emotion and the author's thoughts about landscape, people and places visited are three essential elements in travel writing. Bruce Chatwin, in his The Songlines, masterly uses these three techniques and creates a believable, fascinating, insightful literature.
