Shelton Jackson Lee was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 20, 1957. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, an area that would become the setting of many of his films. Lee's awareness of his African American heritage was established at an early age. His mother, Jacquelyn, instilled within her children, an appreciation for African American art and literature. By the time he was old enough to attend school, Lee had earned the nickname his mother had given him as in an infant, spike.

Condoleezza Rice was born November 14,1954, in Birmingham, Alabama. Rice grew up in segregation -era Birmingham and is the daughter of John Wesley Rice, who ran the Westminster Presbyterian Church, and mother Angelina.
