Environmental conditions affect an animal's health if they are unsuitable for the particular animal or generally unhygienic.
Living in dirty conditions allows disease to spread more rapidly as germs thrive in such conditions. Dirty conditions attract flies which are vectors for many diseases and can cause problems in themselves for animals. Fly strike in rabbits is an unpleasant condition caused by flies and dirty living conditions- if a rabbit is forced to sit in its own faeces it gets a dirty rear end, flies then lay their eggs on the faeces which are on the rabbit and when the maggots hatch they start to feed on the rabbits flesh. Flies can contaminate an animal's food by laying eggs on it. Animals living in dirty conditions will find it difficult to keep themselves clean, making the animal generally unhealthy and pathogens can be ingested orally from the animal's fur/skin/feathers as it tries to clean itself.
If conditions are too cold for an animal, it may go into hibernation which can cause it to die. Reptiles such as snakes and lizards need to be kept at a constant temperature which mimics their natural environment or they can die of hypothermia.
Rodents need access to gnawing materials, if they don't have access to these in their environment they will develop overgrown teeth as their teeth never stop growing throughout their lives.
It is important that you store, handle, administer and dispose of animal medicines safely. It is important that medicines are:
*Stored in a cool, dark, dry environment to prevent it from deteriorating.
