About half the states have names of Indian origin. The rest were named for persons or places or in various other interesting names. There are some of them:
ALASKA: from the Aluet word alakshak, meaning ,,peninsula,, .
CALIFORNIA: probably from the name of an imaginary island in a Spanish novel of about the year 1510. Explorers gave the name to the peninsula because they thought it resembled the imaginary island called California in the novel.
FLORIDA: from the Spanish words Pascua florida, meaning ,,flowery Easer,,.
GEORGIA: for King George II of England.…
