The best thing for the teacher to do and what I would do is keep talking with the girl day by day and constantly encourage her to do the right thing by letting her parents know for the health of the baby if nothing else. My own belief also is that parents will be angry initially, but will come to accept the situation in the long run. At our school we have a counselor that the student would be referred to, and I am not quite sure why the teacher did not refer her there. We also have educational material in the school to help the teenagers make wise decisions on sex issues. There is also material for the teen offering what to do and where to go to in the need of help with such a dilemma as pregnancy.
Whatever virtue is desired, moral philosophers going back to Aristotle have emphasized that it must become a habit. Just as musicians develop musical ability by playing an instrument, people become virtuous by practicing virtue. So too schools roles in promoting character and virtue is a responsibility of all.
