When you push the shutter release, a tiny round hole opens.Through that hole light rays pass. They fall on the film or plate inside and leave an imprint of whatever the camera is aimed at.
This is similar to the way our eyes work.
Look at them in the mirror. You see a round colored circle in the center of each. Some people have brown ones, others have grey or green. That is the iris.
