George’s Orwell’s essay “Why I write” was theme of our first seminar, so it was the one for which I prepared most. In this essay I am going to research the motives of writing, most interesting points and give a little comment about it.
Essay “Why I write” includes four writing motives: sheer egoism, aesthetic enthusiasm, historical purpose and political purpose. In general I agree with all of these motives, but I also have some comments which differ from George’s Orwell’s opinion.
First mentioned motive was sheer egoism. Orwell claims that the sheer egoism is “desire to seem clever, to be talked about, to be remembered after death, to get your own back on the grown-ups who snubbed you in childhood, etc., etc.” Also he remarks that the serious writers, who are not interested so much in money and fame, are more vain and self-centered than those who write for living.…
