The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel by Irish writer Oscar Wilde, which reveals the
personality, look and changing nature of a young man called Dorian Grey throughout the
years. In his work Wilde illustrates the danger of the aestheticism when it is not practiced
with ethical wisdom or morality.
The story starts with an artist Basil Hallward who has painted the picture of Dorian. One day
Basil’s friend Henry Wotton sees the painting and is amazed by its overwhelming beautiness.
After desired meeting Lord Henry introduces Dorian with aristocratic worldview: that beauty
and sensual fulfillment are the only things worth pursuing in life. He persuades a young
innocent man to believe that there is nothing in the world as important as youth and beauty.
Dorian Grey looking to the picture expresses the desire to stay young forever and for the
picture to grow old instead. This wish is the first turning point of many actions which leads
Dorian to his tragic downfall. Dorian has fallen under the influence of Lord Henry and has
become a follower of the new "Hedonism."…
