Setting
The book is set in our days, somewhere around 2015-2016, in Boston, United States. It also has flashbacks to the past events told in the forms of diary entries. Those flashbacks are set in 2008 in Maine, United States.

Plot
The book begins with the main character, Lily Bloom, standing on a rooftop and thinking about the eulogy she gave at her abusive father’s funeral. There she meets Ryle Kincaid, a neurosurgery resident who came to the rooftop to work through his anger at losing a patient. They share “naked truths” and get to know each other better. Although they are mutually attracted to each other, they do not pursue each other because Lily wants a serious relationship while Ryle is only interested in a non-committal fling. …
