As is Halloween in America, Ivan Kupala night is believed to be the night of witches sabbath. Ghosts and evil spirits are wondering around and are playing tricks on everyone, so people are trying to protect themselves. They put garlands of special plants that have magical protective properties on the outside of their houses or on the windows. It is believed that on Kupala night rivers are glowing with a special light, trees can speak in the human language and even walk from place to place.
Even though Ivan Kupala celebration has come a long way from the pagan era to our present time, it hasn't lost its mystery and excitement. It is neither advertised in the media, nor attended by the president, but it is still enjoying ever-increasing popularity among people.
