Microsoft Plans to Introduce a Windows XP Update

Auto-update does not ensure that computer virus are a thing of the past, it can only protect so much, users still can still do something as simple as clicking on a e-mail attachment and get infected, patches do little to stop viruses that rely not on Windows flaws. A new version of the Sasser Internet worm, Sasser-F, appeared on Monday, 5/10/04 despite claims by German authorities to have arrested the sole author of that worm on Friday, 5/5/04 a mere four days after MS issued its first version, that tells me that computers will probably never have complete security that a user thinks they have.
