The purpose of this paper is to determine how lexical meaning is established in the layer of syntagmatic meaning relationships in two world-famous songs: ‘The Roar’ by Katy Perry [T1] and ’Inside Out’ by Bryan Adams [T2], which make up the corpus of this research. This study is limited to lexical meaning analysis alone and does not entail grammatical semantics. Also, paradigmatic meaning relationship analysis is beyond the scope of this research due to volume constraints.
At the outset of this research, two research questions were set: (1) How are syntagmatic meaning relationships established in the songs? and (2) What meaning is created through identified lexical items?
