The French Lieutenant’s Woman is a novel by John Fowles, and it was written in 1969. John Fowles is a famous English novelist and essayist of the 20th century. The novel was inspired by the 1823 novel Ourika by Claire de Duras, which Fowles translated to English.
In this extract of the novel John Fowles uses the first person narration. The purpose of using the first person narrative is to give us impression that we are participating in the story, and that we are closer to the characters, actions and events. The first person narrator speaks in the past tense. That means that the narrator is telling us the story that has already happened some time ago.…
