In John Steinbeck's novel The Pearl, a couple’s life is dramatically changed when Kino finds a pearl of great value. He begins to dream of the benefits that his family will gain. However, "something infinitely black and evil," which symbolizes greediness and envy, has started to spread over the town. In the novel symbolism can be found in the characters, colors, and animals and objects.
