The survey carried out for seven years by Dr. Axel Reetz and Veiko Spolitis reveals that the percentage of men studying humanities and social studies hardly reaches 10% of all students, meaning, there are more women than men in higher education. The reasons for this are not purely demographic, as the popular concept that there are more women than men in Latvia is proved to be wrong too. In fact, the research states that the difference between the number of boys and girls in 2002 was as vast as 29 000 babies. The reasons why women study more than men lie mostly in traditions and in the peculiarities of each gender, withal, if this tendency is not stopped, there might be some unpleasant consequences for both.…
